iOS 12.2 Battery Life Test : Has it improved over iOS 12.1.4?

March 28, 2019 21 Comments

So as always iOS 12.2 is out and many will wonder… Will it ruin my battery life, or will it improve my battery life over iOS 12.1.4

I try to figure that out by comparing iOS 12.2 vs iOS 12.1.4 in battery life using the battery life test of Geekbench 4.

First I run the test on iOS 12.1.4, then upgrade to iOS 12.2 and run the full test once more, and then compare the scores. All conditions kept the same in both tests. Room temperature this time was around 19 degrees celsius

Max Battery capacity of the phones are revealed in the video, and all are performing to max performance

The iPhone 6S are on TMSC chipset.

Hope you enjoy the video.

How Geekbench works :

Geekbench 4 battery scores measure the battery life of a device when running processor-intensive applications. It provides a consistent workload to the device, and generates a Geekbench score by evaluating the amount of work that it is able to do while the battery is discharging and the amount of time it takes for the battery to discharge.

The battery benchmark can be run in Full Discharge mode, from 100% to 0% battery level, to provide a high level of confidence in a device’s battery performance. The battery benchmark can also be run in Partial Discharge mode, for 3 hours. If the battery benchmark is stopped after 10 minutes, by the user or by the battery reaching 0%, then the result will be saved and can be uploaded. Battery benchmark scores gathered by any method except the Full Discharge mode provide a medium level of confidence in a device’s battery performance, and longer tests are more reliable.

When comparing scores, remember that higher scores are better, and double the score indicates double the performance.

When I first downloaded iOS 12.2 on my iPhone 6, it was running slow, battery life seemed worse and the Geekbench scores were lower.  But after running it for 3 days, things have leveled out and I would say overall the phone runs better and battery life is back to where it was.

I am right now filming a battery test of iPhone 6S on iOS 10.3.3 vs iOS 11.4.1 vs iOS 12.2 vs iOS 12.3 Beta 1. This is made possible since I just replaced the batteries in the 4 iPhone 6S's. It is still filming, but I can already say the result is VERY interesting!! Stay tuned !
Note that the batteries in the 6 and the 6S in this video are brand new (100%)

  10. For me the battery was slightly worse on 12.2 with iPhone 8 Plus with battery health at 100% Nice video by the way.
